Advocacy (IEP)

Here in Illinois there are a few places you can turn to find advocates. When making an IEP for school generally the parents and teachers get together to discuss goals and set up supports and services for the year. Parents can also call meetings throughout the year if...

Newsela and the News

Last year when we took a break to go remote our local school decided that they didn't want to pressure the kids with learning anything new. The grade school, we were doing 5th grade, simply wanted to work on keeping up the students social emotional learning. My little...

CodaKid (More Coding) or you can learn and have fun too!

There are so many ways to make learning fun. One of the things we've tied in is CodaKid (besides Tynker). On a side note though, last night we were watching the new Netflix documentary on the Social Dilemma. A documentary-drama hybrid that explores the human impact of...

Tynker Coding (adding coding to homeschool)

Debating what to study for homeschooling, one of our thoughts was 'We need a language!'. We discussed every option of language we had some experience with and looked at what colleges are accepting. Interestingly enough some colleges now are taking programming...

Playing with Fractions using Cooking

We were needing a break a couple days ago during homeschooling and making cookies seemed to check all the boxes. I was reminded of the old skit by Bill Cosby where he discussed cake for breakfast.... eggs, milk.... yep it's breakfast! Making cookies is fractions! We...

Starting Home School

Yep, we decided to completely swap to homeschool, we got our curriculum (we got extra!) and we are ready. What we learned quickly was the same as the old adage about too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup or whatever that saying is... both my husband and I...

Homeschooling: Choosing a Curriculum for our 2e

We've enriched in the past, but this is our first year completely homeschooling. Choosing a curriculum resulted in us changing our mind several times. At first we bought a set of textbooks for each subject in the correct grade level. We could just make our own. I...

Planning Curriculum

I just saw in an email that curriculum materials are the new toilet paper... Luckily we had started early. No matter what we do though I'll second guess my decisions. We know we definitely want something secular, and we were hoping to follow the common core standards...

No Distance Learning Available?

Our school came out with a draft plan and it doesn't include distance learning. The school mentioned possibly including distance learning for students that are home bound for medical reasons, but that lets out a lot of families. Most families are torn on going back to...

2e, What’s that?

Twice Exceptional is a phrase for someone that is special needs and also gifted. Twice exceptional is also known as 2e. From my experience these students tend to get passed over a lot. As a parent of a 2e student we frequently heard things like he's doing so well...

Homeschooling? Autism and the Break at our house.

When the break for the virus started our school decided at first to just give the students the first days off as Act of God days. My son's grade school was made an effort to start posting on Facebook and reaching out to the students. Letting them know that they were...

Teaching

Right now I'm working as a long term sub at a near by school. It's our local school district and the district is the one I went to school in when I was in school (and my dad as well as his family also)… So I have an allegiance to the school. That being said, after...

Common Core?

It seems like almost everyday I hear a complaint about common core. Maybe I'm just more sensitive and notice it more at the moment, but the complaints are definitely there. All the complaints seem aimed at math specifically. The reason given for common core is to make...

iRobot (Robots Too)

This year we decided to add an iRobot remote controlled robot to our collection.  It has a rechargeable battery, a camera, and treads!  The cool arm that is included has a pincher that allows the robot to pick up items and carry them around the house.   The boys on...

Ted Talk on Procrastination

My middle son just started a special research program at Oak Ridge National Lab (Yep, I'm proud of him)...  that being said, on the way back from taking items down for him to move in we listened to TED talks.  One I just had to offer an opinion on was about...

My son loves watching youtube videos. It's one of his methods of stimming.  He likes watching the videos of other people playing his favorite games like minecraft.  We have his computer set up right beside our television in the living room, so that whether we are...

Circuits Maze

For the holidays, one of the gifts we got for the little one was Circuit Maze and I have to admit I love it!  Circuits is port of the fourth grade curriculum here, so it ties in well with the future of what will be going on in school.  The game though is well designed...

Indy Children’s Museum

The Indy Children's museum has built on a lot since we started going.  The have a lot of really cool exhibits.   We only were able to see a few in the couple hours time we had - though we made it to the exhibit to see the Terra Cotta Warriors.  There are lots of great...

Lowe’s Build and Grow

There are tons of great activities you can find and sign up for online.  One that is free is Lowe’s Build and Grow!  It’s usually held the first Saturday of each month and is free! We decided to give it a try this month and got to make Christmas Ornaments.  My little one did a great job with the hammer.  Activities can be found around town by keeping an eye on local sites for activities and signing up for mailing lists that send out reminders about activity sign ups coming up.

Let’s Build a Gingerbread House….

This year we decided to get a gingerbread house…  for Halloween.  We just now finally got around to making it.  Our included green icing – which wasn’t especially soft anymore, candy corn, and Scooby doo!  Most kits include the icing, gingerbread, and some candy and this was no different.  The kits are all over….

All the gingerbread came prebaked and put together.  We ended up not adding much extra candy to the house… I’ve now noticed ours is being eaten piecemeal.  The houses can be made and decorated anyway we wanted though.  My little one really enjoyed deciding how to design his!

Trip to Virginia

While in Virginia we thought we would see a few things. First I searched the internet for things to do with kids in the Charlottesville, VA area. We were going for a physics conference and only going to be there for a couple days at most.
It just happened to be the Thursday after the election – so travelling in a new area was making me a little nervous, but I was following my usual plan of be polite to everyone and see what happens.  We met some great people on our trip. I can recommend the Omni Hotel and the Pointe restaurant that’s in the hotel for sure.  The server we had were great even with our unique requests for things like nothing extra on the plate and they had chicken strips that matched what my son wanted.

We decided to explore the historic mall the first morning and found the Discovery Museum.  My little one didn’t want to check it out – though he was willing to take a picture in front of it, but we did meet one of the board members later.  It definitely looks like something to add to your list!  There was even a carousel across from the museum. Several families were taking advantage of it while they waited for the museum to open.

While exploring we found a graffiti wall that has things written that are erased each week.  This week with the election the wall was full of comments on both sides.  We could see the fear coming out from the comments on the wall.  I was a little worried that my little one would be affected seeing the wall, and he has asked questions over time about the election – but didn’t seem to say much about the graffiti.  There was also a pedestal where people that want to practice orating can stand and give speeches.  I’d love to see more during normal times – and what the wall has during times that aren’t quite so controversial.

We then headed to Monticello and to Ashland.  Monticello was packed (Thomas Jefferson’s home – 3rd President) and Ashland was pretty empty (4th President).  We didn’t make it to Montpelier.  I did learn a lot on the trip though…. For example Monticello is an Italian word – I thought it was French!  My favorite though is that if you ask for directions to Monticello from OnStar you will end up at a cemetery (Monticello Memorial Park).

On the trip we mostly learned about history, but we also shared some Mommy and Little One time!

Partly Off Topic – Political…..

It always amazes me how much our kids pick up from adults…. and explaining things going on around us is tough.  I believe strongly in letting my kids decide, but I’m sure our decisions bleed over too….  We try in everything to look up and have sources.  This was a discussion with my little one though about what the atmosphere is like at school around the election.
My youngest (8) said that several of his friends are voting for Donald Trump (I read that as their parents though one is voting for Donald Duck because he likes the name)  and I asked if they discussed why and he said his friends told him because Hillary Clinton lies more…. So we discussed it, and I pulled up polifacts and we talked about how to read the charts showing the number of lies each has told from True facts to Pants on Fire lies. He was pretty impressed and figured out the chart quickly. (#soproudofmyson) So then we had to discuss why his friends parents may feel that way, and the only thing I could tell him was that my thought was because Hillary Clinton made her job politics some people assume politicians lie all the time, like people just assume that scientist like physicist and mathemeticians are geniuses because of what they do, that people on welfare aren’t intelligent, or that athletes are fast runners (I was having a hard time with examples..) #butitried Explaining to an 8 year old is not easy! Especially if your family believes in respect everyone, make your own decisions, and education.
We did use this as a learning moment on how to read graphs, and I’m really hoping all goes well today.  My little one will go with me today to vote and will see more of the system.  I’m hoping he will see the good in people!

Videos and Fun!

img_0300

A fun thing my little one and I have done that I’ve found he enjoys is making videos of things we have gotten to review.  I like to post reviews of items I’ve gotten on Amazon to let people know what I think of them…. (the ball below isn’t this one, but it is the same type of ball).  I was debating one day if there was a way to make a video explaining the ball but couldn’t hole the camera too.  One option would have been for my little one to hold the camera, but he tends to cut heads off – or other body parts.

At this point I found that Konnor just loved explaining each of the items and how they worked on camera.  For a kid that doesn’t like pictures normally, social interaction with his peers, and a lot of other things…. I was a little surprised, but super proud of him.  He proceeded to look at the instruction card that came with and demonstrate each of the things on the card.  I had gotten a few different yoga things and he demonstrated each one – A lot better than I would of! Even if the videos are just for us, he did a great job and enjoyed it.  It also got him moving, trying each thing.  In the process he found that he loves playing with the yoga ball!  So it is still center stage in our living room and used as everything from a chair to a toy.

YouTube Stimming

Stimming is: Self-stimulatory behaviour – or stimming – is repetitive or unusual body movement or noises.  My son stims though as he gets older I’ve noticed the type of stimming has changed.  He would pace and pace, making the whole floor shake when in the house doing it.  He would tell me my body just wiggles.  He still paces, but I have seen a reduction as he gets older.

Last Friday I attended a Special Needs Summit at our local university and the top of stimming came up.  The summit included a panel of college age children that were all diagnosed.  I can say it was amazing and I learned so much!  During the panel though, the topic of stimming was discussed and the panel all agreed that one of their mutual stimming examples that they all seemed to have moved to was viewing youtube videos.  I have to say this brought me to tears as I realized what all that time my son was now doing spending watching youtube!  All the times I was feeling like a horrible parent for letting my son watch youtube hours on end.  I have to add for me I felt that it was reducing the risk of him falling as he paced, as he has a hard time with coordination and we have hard wood floors, so once in a while pacing would lead to everything from stubbed toes to bruised knees.

I suddenly was struck by the fact that as he has gotten older I don’t hear the pacing indoors as much.  He does have a stimming behavior of chewing every straw he encounters, which until recently I didn’t have a clue was also stimming…..  As a parent we slowly learn and do our best not to stop behavior without research first…..

It does make me wonder how to respond to the people saying limit screen time, at the same time as battling with the autism mom mind knowing my child needs to stimming to regulate his own behavior?  Luckily as an autism mom I have gotten good at totally ignoring what people think of my parenting skills.
